The US Air Force Academy is to add Wicca and other ”Earth-centred” religions to its worship facilities for Christians, Jews, Muslims and Buddhists. The site is tentatively scheduled for dedication in March.
A double circle of stones on top of a hill on the campus has been designated as the site, according the NPR’s website. Chaplain of the Cadet Wing at the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Lieutenant Colonel William Ziegler said:
Every service member is charged with defending freedom for all Americans, and that includes freedom to practice our religion of choice or, for that matter, not to practice any faith at all. Being in the military isn't just a job -- it's a calling. We all take an oath to support and defend the Constitution, and that means we've all sworn to protect one another's religious liberties. We all put on our uniforms the same way; we're all Airmen first.
News24 said the academy chapel had worked with Technical Sergeant Brandon Longcrier, a neo-pagan, to choose the site. Longcrier said the stones had earlier been moved to prevent them rolling downhill and causing damage and had been placed in a circle with the idea that this would prove to be a pleasant place for cadets to relax.
NPR said the Air Force Academy had made religious tolerance a priority following an investigation into complaints that non-evangelical Christians were being picked on by evangelicals.
